The Workshop
The studio is located on a 70 acre parcel in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, 45 minutes west of the city of Calgary, Alberta, home of the ’88 Winter Olympics. Situated on a knoll above Chisel Creek, the studio offers a picturesque view of Moose Mountain, as well as glimpses of visitors to the property in the form of deer, fox, wolf, coyote, bear, cougar, and moose.
Bordering Kananaskis Country to the west and provincial park to the south, a short walk from the studio brings one to a network of skiing, hiking, horse-back-riding, and mountain-biking trails that can be enjoyed year round. The nearest town, 7kms to the east, is the idyllic hamlet of Bragg Creek, which is a destination getaway for those seeking clear mountain air.
The inhabitants of the workshop include me, my assistant, and an apprentice. This keeps the discussions, questions, and lively discourse flowing throughout the day. When the radio or CD is playing, the musical tastes range from classical to folk. Evenings in the studio from time to time have been spent jamming with the local talent on the latest creations.
